Welcome to the home of the biennial ‘Literature and Physical Culture’ academic conference series.
The purpose of these conferences is to examine the idea of sporting physical culture as it appears within textual culture, reappraising the significance of sporting physical culture beyond the traditional historical frameworks, reassessing its place within the wider cultural landscape. It asks how sport and sporting lexis is transformed in subsequent cultural outputs, such as novels, poetry and theatre, and how its importance to the wider population is reflected and developed in these outputs. It also explores the broader context of the changing nature of sport’s inclusion within literature from the sixteenth century to the present.
The inaugural conference will bring together for the first time established scholars of English Literature, including many that have not obviously worked in this hitherto largely unexplored field.
